What Is a CS2 Skin Float Value and Why It Matters
Every skin in CS2 carries a hidden decimal number that decides how beaten up it looks. Traders call it the float. Understanding it is the difference between paying for condition you can actually see and paying for a number nobody will ever notice in-game.
What the float value actually is
The float — properly, the wear value — is a number between 0 and 1 that is generated once, when the item is created, and never changes again. Zero is a flawless, untouched finish. One is a weapon that looks like it was dragged behind a truck. Everything in between is a sliding scale of scratches, paint loss and exposed metal.
The value is stored as a 32-bit floating point number, which is where the nickname comes from. It’s why you see floats quoted to absurd precision — 0.06997421 rather than just “0.07”. Those trailing digits are real data, and in a handful of cases they’re worth money.
Critically, the float is baked in at generation. Using the skin, dying with it, playing a thousand matches — none of it changes the number. A Battle-Scarred AK didn’t get that way through use. It rolled that way the moment it was unboxed.
The five wear brackets
Valve doesn’t show players the raw number in the loadout UI. Instead the 0–1 range is chopped into five named brackets, and the bracket is what appears in the item name.

The boundaries are exclusive at the top: a skin at 0.0699 is Factory New, a skin at 0.0700 is Minimal Wear. That single-digit difference in the fourth decimal place can be a meaningful gap in price, which is exactly why traders care about the number rather than the label.
Notice also how uneven the brackets are. Field-Tested spans 0.23 of the range — nearly a quarter of the entire scale — while Well-Worn covers just 0.07. That’s why “Field-Tested” is close to meaningless as a description on its own. A 0.16 Field-Tested and a 0.37 Field-Tested are the same item name and can be visually very different weapons.
Every skin has its own float range
Here’s the part that trips up newer traders: the 0–1 scale is theoretical. Each individual finish has its own minimum and maximum wear defined by the artist, and the skin can only ever generate inside that window.
Some finishes are capped low. Several knife finishes top out around 0.08, which means they essentially only exist in Factory New with a narrow sliver of Minimal Wear — you will never see one in Field-Tested, no matter how long you look. Others are floored high. The AWP Asiimov, famously, has a minimum wear of 0.18, so Factory New and Minimal Wear versions simply do not exist. The cleanest Asiimov in the world is a Field-Tested one.
This has two practical consequences. First, “Field-Tested” on a capped skin is not a compromise, it’s the top of the market — and it’s priced accordingly. Second, when someone advertises a “lowest float in existence” claim, the number only means something relative to that skin’s own floor. A 0.18 Asiimov is at the absolute minimum for that finish. A 0.18 on a skin that starts at 0.00 is an unremarkable Field-Tested.
Before you pay a premium for a low number, check what the floor for that particular finish actually is.
How the number gets generated
When you open a case, the game rolls a random value and maps it onto the chosen skin’s wear range. Roll low, you land near the skin’s minimum; roll high, near its maximum. Across the whole population of a skin, floats spread out fairly evenly through its permitted range, which is why extreme values at either end are rare in absolute terms — there simply aren’t many rolls that land in the bottom thousandth of the window.
Trade-up contracts work differently, and this is where float becomes a strategy rather than a lottery. When you feed ten skins of the same rarity into a contract, the game takes the average of the input wear values and maps that average proportionally onto the output skin’s own range. Feed in ten very low-float inputs and you get a low-float output. Feed in ten trashed ones and the result comes out near the bottom of its range. This is the mechanism behind the entire low-float trade-up scene: people hoard cheap, extremely clean inputs specifically to manufacture clean outputs of a higher tier.
Souvenir items are excluded from trade-ups entirely, and inputs have to match on StatTrak status, so you can’t mix.
Why two skins in the same bracket look different
Float controls how much wear is applied, but the skin’s own texture controls where it shows up and how obvious it is. A dark, busy, heavily-patterned finish hides scratching well — a Field-Tested example can look genuinely fine in a match. A clean solid colour or a smooth gradient shows every mark, and even Minimal Wear can look rough on the edges.
Wear also doesn’t apply uniformly across the model. The game concentrates it on the areas an artist marked as high-contact: edges, corners, the magazine, the barrel shroud. On some skins that’s precisely where the artwork lives, and modest wear wrecks the design. On others the damage lands on plain metal nobody looks at.
The practical result: judging a skin by its bracket name is a mistake. Judge it by looking at it. Inspect the actual item in-game or through an inspect link before you commit — the same float on two different finishes buys you two completely different experiences.
When float actually justifies a premium
Float premiums fall into three broad categories, and only two of them are rational.
Bracket-edge buying is rational. A Minimal Wear sitting at the very bottom of its bracket — just past the Factory New cutoff — looks close to Factory New but is priced as Minimal Wear. Similarly, a Field-Tested near 0.15 is the cleanest version of a bracket that runs all the way to 0.38, and often the best value in the whole listing set. Hunting these is a genuine edge and costs you nothing except patience.
Extreme-low floats are rational on skins where it shows. On finishes where the wear is visible and the community has built a collecting culture around clean examples — and particularly on skins with a hard cap where the floor is contested — very low numbers command a real, liquid premium. Someone will always want the cleanest one.
Chasing decimals on skins where nothing is visible is not rational. On a skin whose Factory New range produces no perceptible difference between 0.001 and 0.06, you are paying for a number in a text field. Some traders enjoy that as a collecting exercise, which is fine, but be honest with yourself about whether you’re buying an appearance or a statistic. If you ever want to sell, the buyer pool for “technically impressive float on a skin nobody float-hunts” is thin.
Float is not pattern
One common confusion worth clearing up: float and pattern index are two separate numbers.
Float controls condition. The pattern index — also called the paint seed — controls where the texture sits on the model. It’s what determines whether a Case Hardened comes out mostly blue or mostly gold, how much of a Fade you actually get, where the webs land on a Crimson Web, and whether a Marble Fade lands on a sought-after arrangement.
For most skins the pattern is irrelevant and every copy looks broadly the same. For a specific set of finishes, pattern is worth vastly more than float, and a top-tier pattern in a mediocre wear will outprice a flawless float in a plain pattern many times over. Know which category the skin you’re buying falls into before you decide which number to optimise for.
Checking float before you buy
Any listing worth taking seriously exposes the exact wear value, not just the bracket. If a seller only shows “Field-Tested” and won’t provide the number or an inspect link, treat that as a red flag — the reasonable assumption is that the float sits at the ugly end of the bracket.
When you do have the number, run three checks. Where does it sit inside the bracket? Where does it sit inside the skin’s own range? And does the visible result actually match what you’re paying over the bracket baseline? Those three questions kill most float-related overpays before they happen.
Practical takeaway
Float is a fixed wear value from 0 to 1, assigned at creation, that maps to one of five named condition brackets. The brackets are uneven and the label alone tells you very little — the raw number tells you a lot more. Every finish has its own float ceiling and floor, so always judge a number relative to that specific skin, not the abstract 0–1 scale.
Buy near the clean edge of a bracket when you want value, buy extreme lows only on skins where the difference is visible and the collector demand is real, and never confuse float with pattern. And whatever the number says, inspect the skin before you pay — your eyes are the final arbiter, not the decimals.
